Precede \Pre*cede"\, verb (used with an object) [imp. & p. p. {Preceded}; p. pr. & vb. n. {Preceding}.] [L. praecedere, praecessum; prae before + cedere to go, to be in motion: cf. F. pr['e]ceder. See {Pre-}, and {Cede}.]
